How to become a College Counsellor

A college counselor is a  professional that guides students in decision making throughout their period in college.

Universities and colleges employ qualified counselors and psychologists to help students having emotional problems or disorders in overcoming them.

Becoming a College Counsellor

To become a college counselor, there are steps you will have to take. These steps are provided below;

  • The first step is having a bachelor’s degree in college counseling or related fields. This will enhance your skills and knowledge with a diverse research foray among the populace,
  • After this, the pursuit of a Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology. The master’s degree will give in-depth knowledge and skills on the human behavioral patterns and also widen the theoretical process of your research skill.
  • Third, you must undergo an internship scheme that will add to your experience and prepare you for licensing requirements. This will involve thorough supervision and will qualify you to apply for a state license to practice.
  • You have to write National Counsellor Examination (NCE) or the National Counsellor Mental Health Counselling Examination (NCMHCE). Though not all states or employees require this.
  • The next step is to further or continue or apply for certifications. Certifications display your education, experience, and level of counseling skills
  • Continuing your education and being updated by the trends and changes in college counseling.

Duties of a College Counsellor

The job growth rate of college counselors is expected to increase by 13 percent from 2016 to 2026 by the Bureau Labor of Statistics.

It also projects that 36, 700 school counselors would be needed through the year to 2026.

Additionally, a career like a psychologist is expected to increase by 20 percent through the year 2024.

The field of social work is expected to project by 12% through 2014-2024.
