Brief Description and Historical Background of Iowa State University

Iowa state university is a production of legislation enacted in 1856. It was initially established as Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. The Iowa State University was formally created on March 22, 1858 by the General Assembly.

It was designated as a land grant college on March 29, 1864 with the opinion that university education should be accessible to everyone and that they should offer practical and liberal subjects.

On the 21st of June, 1859, the location of the college was chosen as Story County. The land area used was 648 acres of land (about 2.62 kilometers square) was bought at five thousand, three hundred and seventy-nine dollars.

The first building on the Iowa State campus was completed in 1861 before it was occupied by students and classrooms.

The first President of the school where he wrote his first inaugural speech. Note that the college was first majorly used as an agricultural experimentation school. However courses like mechanical, civil, electrical, and mining engineering where taught.

Iowa State University’s academic offerings are administered through eight colleges. The school offers more than 100 bachelor’s degree programs, 112 master’s degree programs, and 83 at the doctoral level and a professional degree in veterinary medicine.

It is arguably the largest university in Iowa and the 3rs largest university in the big 12 athletic conferences.  Iowa State University has a high degree of research activities. It is a public land grant and space grant university. It is also worthy of note to say that it is a member of the Association of American Universities.

The University is part of the founding members of the Big 12 athletic conference. It has 16 varsity teams and they are referred to as the CYCLONES. They have won numerous NCAA national championships.
